The Year of the Snake is here, and you know what that means? It’s time to shed that old, tired skin. For me, that means cutting ties with something sneaky, and way too controlling: the algorithm’s chokehold on my creativity.
Earlier this week, I caught myself procrastinating—stalling over creating a LinkedIn post like it was a life-or-death decision. Not because I lacked something to say, not because I wasn’t excited to share, but because I was waiting for the “optimal” time to post—the golden hour for engagement.
And then it hit me: WHY THE FLOCK AM I LETTING A BUNCH OF CODE DICTATE MY VOICE?!
Well, it didn’t hit me exactly like that. I was listening to a really cool interview with Dr. K, where he discussed this issue in depth.
Like many creators, somewhere along the way, I stopped creating for the love of it and started optimizing for an audience. Performing instead of connecting. Tweaking instead of truth-telling. And that realization bonked me right in the face.
So I said, flock it —and created.
I celebrated the amazing students I met at the University of Florida last week. I shared their energy, their curiosity, and their brilliance. And guess what? It felt great.
Here’s the deal: We’re constantly shedding. Whether we realize it or not, we’re continually evolving—peeling off old layers and stepping into something new. That’s just biology. But the real power? Doing it on purpose.
So this year, I’m continuing to shed the mental gymnastics of “Will this perform well?” to “Does this matter?”
What I know for sure? Creating a purpose-driven personal brand isn’t about looking polished or sounding smart. It’s about the mindset. It’s the shift from performing to expressing, from chasing perfection to showing the hell up.
And this? This isn’t just about content. This is about how we move through the world—online, in our careers, and lives.
So, here’s to shedding the layers of expectations and stepping into what’s real.
