Years ago, I scribbled something down during a retreat. I don’t remember the session or the speaker. But I remember the words:
“Be. Not do.”
I didn’t question it at the time. Just wrote it down. Moved on. I was likely already shifting into what I needed to do next.
But that little phrase keeps coming back. Quietly persistent. As if it’s waiting for me to finally get it.
This past week, it showed up again, but this time, it landed so differently. It happened when Greg McKeown’s newsletter hit my inbox with a subject line that stopped me:
“Don’t start with strategy. Start with identity.”
Something clicked. Like, deeply clicked.
Because when I’m stuck, overwhelmed, unsure, and off-track, my instinct is to reach for a solution. A plan. A new to-do list. Something to fix it.
We’re conditioned to do. DO more. Fix the system. Update the strategy. Hustle harder.
But that’s a trap. It keeps us chasing some perfect version of ourselves like it’s something out ahead of us, instead of something already within us.
Wowza. I know that chase.
There have been times in my life when I’ve felt like a puppet. My strings pulled by goals, deliverables, expectations. I was going through the motions, doing all the right things, looking ahead to some far-off version of “enough.” I was doing life. But I wasn’t being in it.
That’s why Greg’s line landed so deeply this time around. Because, starting with identity doesn’t mean scrapping your strategy. It just means your strategy services your becoming – not the other way around.
That’s the work we do at SWAY | LIVE.
We don’t start with bullet points and branding. We start with you.
So, what does “being” have to do with a personal brand?
Everything.
Because your personal brand isn’t something you build like a business plan. It’s not earned through perfection or performance. It’s revealed when you pause long enough to remember who you are and what matters.
Let me say that again:
You don’t earn your way into being.
You return to it.
You reclaim it.
You root your brand in it.
When you do that, your brand stops being a mask. It becomes a mirror. A reflection of your values. Your voice. Your truth.
And from there, the right people recognize you. The right doors open. The noise gets quieter. And your work? It starts to flow with a kind of ease that strategy alone can’t deliver.
If this resonates…
If you’ve felt the puppet strings. If you’ve been deep in the doing. If you’re craving a more grounded, more honest, more energizing way to show up in your work and your world…
I’d love to invite you to SWAY | LIVE 25.
It’s not just a conference. It’s a space to pause, reflect, and remember who you are — so your message, your presence, and your brand start flowing from that deeper place.
Because when you root your work in identity, you don’t have to force it.
