Captain’s Log: Personal Stardate 00:91
Years ago, I accepted a role at a very well-known, highly respected bank.
It was an amazing opportunity.
But I’d read something right before I started that stuck with me:
“Within 90 days, your ability to impact company culture fades. After that, the culture changes you.”
So, on Day 91, I started each morning with this quiet reminder:
“I will not be assimilated.”
If you’re not an old-school, Star Trek nerd, stay with me for second.
The bad guys on the fourth season of Star Trek, Next Generation were the Borg. They were massive, cybernetic hive-mind species that “assimilated” individuals by wiping away their uniqueness and turning them into obedient drones. Shiny implants. No personality. Just cold, calculated efficiency. Sound familiar?
It’s not that I wanted to be disrespectful.
I just wanted to stay the same person they hired — someone who was hungry, not afraid of the hustle, and just a bit too creative for the banking world.
It became my personal rebellion cry.
Against sameness.
Against autopilot.
Against becoming just another well-behaved banker with a compliant signature block.
That’s still the battle in financial services.
So many voices. So much sameness.
And in the quest to fit in, many professionals forget how to stand out.
That’s the real risk of skipping SWAY | LIVE 25.
Because this isn’t just a conference.
It’s a call to remember who you are — and lead with it.
Your personal brand isn’t a logo or a fancy PowerPoint deck.
