Spring has officially unpacked its bags here in Portland. The trees are budding, the air smells like fresh beginnings, and the neighborhood birds are in full-blown building mode.
Out back in the massive oak tree, the downy woodpeckers are at it again, revisiting the condo/triplex they started last spring. Apparently, the original floor plan needs a little reimagining. So now, it’s back to the drawing board. Each day, they peck away at the structure, tossing sawdust down like confetti.
Our sidewalk looks less concrete and more like “nature’s glitter runway.”
Just a few branches over, the crows are on their own mission. They’ve paired up and are hard at work with their version of nest-flipping, snapping off twigs, testing each one for the just-right fit. They’re very choosy. Marie Kondo would likely be proud of their approach. If it doesn’t feel right, they toss it. That means our yard is now dotted with skinny, cast-off twigs–little leftovers from the creative process,
Watching it all unfold, I couldn’t help but see a metaphor hiding in the feathers and flying debris.
These woodpeckers and crows are building something.
Adjusting. Scrapping. Rebuilding.
Kind of like… us.
